1 point masai
In the past few decades there have been countless missionaries sent into the depths of Africa and with them have come several “evangelistic tools” to help overcome cultural barriers. These tools are designed to make the gospel accessible and friendly to all ages…and cultures; the evangecube, salvation bracelets, the bridge illustration the Jesus movie and so on. At one particular crusade in the bush bush of Uganda it was decided to show the Jesus film and the masai people came from all around to see the “moving picture.”
The masai are a great people, almost mythical in fact as they are known to be fearless men possessing irrational amounts of courage and strength. They are warriors –have been for centuries and always will be. It is a sight to see men of their tall stature strolling through town wearing traditional red or purple cloth, with gauged ears and long walking sticks. Their stride is broad and they seem to always be moving in slow motion. A very striking people. (At least these are the Masai I know)
They grew very fond of Jesus quickly as they saw him perform miracle after miracle. He was compassionate and good. Some were moved to tears even. But then the part came for Jesus to be arrested. The Romans came with spears and armor, Peter cuts off the man’s ear and soon enough Jesus is arrested. Greatly moved, one of the masai sitting in the crowd rose to his feet, spear in hand, and let out a large cry. He hurled his spear clear through the screen in efforts to slay the Roman soldier. A great uproar broke out and the tribe was ready to charge. It took a good few minutes to calm everyone down and explain that this really did happen but it is not happening right now. In some way I was shocked at the reaction that they would in a moment stand up for something they thought was good. I thought “am I able to do that?” “would I do that?” or do I often take time to consider my schedule and my investment in the situation before I take action against injustice? At home when I witness things I know are clearly wrong- is this my approach and attitude?
