Today was our final day with Irma….for the last 2 months Irma has been our Mexicano Madra (Mexican Mom). We have visited her regularly for wonderful afternoons of living room chats and excellent homemade Mexican meals. Irma loves to cook and at her pleasure we learned to make tamales and tortillas, guacamole, rice pudding and refried beans.  I am sure going to miss her and hope to come back to visit some day. By then I will be fluent in Spanish and there will be much more than smiles and good wishes between us. It has been refreshing getting to know Irma, her faith is steadfast and God is faithful no matter the circumstance. In her words they are “simple people in a small home with few things but that is enough. Maricio and I are greatly blessed because we have good health and work.” We prayed with Irma often and most days every request made was not for her house, but for those in the community who do not know Christ and for those who have no food. Life is not necessarily easy in Buenos Aires but there is a simplicity that I’ve never experienced at home. People here understand silence. They are comfortable sitting in a room together without needing words, just enjoying one another’s company. Through 12 years of marriage Irma has not had any children but she has come to call us her kids from America (who even scolds us about our lack of vegetable intake-well that’s mostly directed at John). I know she will pray for all of us in Uganda and I hope it is sooner than later that I see her again.
